Podcast of Champions. All-time Pac-12 Villains and a Bruin.

I’m not sure it’s worth a qual/quant analysis of what makes a sports villain. Like a four-year old, loathing a given competitor can be justified with a whiny, “Just cause.” Pushing the hater any further leads them to incoherent rambling about a nominal three-pointer he hit and the classless celebration that followed. What a dick!

This is the sort of stuff we explored with my good friend (met via Twitter), Luc. A Bruin faithful and kind enough to not egregiously rub Bryce’s three in our Wildcat faces, it was great to get his perspective on the UCLA program and Pac-12 slate two weeks deep.

Per usual requests: give Luc a follow, us an iTunes subscription or review, and enjoy:

THREE FOR BART: Titus, Newcomers, Soul

  1. Titus’s Top 12 NCAA Power Rankings: Want Heartbreak? Play Arizona Forget that. Want heartbreak? Root for Arizona. Outside of that, I think this is the first time two Pac-12 teams are in the Titus rankings. UCLA might’ve squeaked in at some point last year but definitively Utah is in there now. And now you’ve got to read Titus’  Utah blurb.
  2. Pac-12 Burning Questions: Favorite Newcomer? – Over at the RTC microsite, we answered questions about our favorite newcomers. I think this is going to spark a bigger profile of Gary Payton II. Nevertheless, gotta read this thing for Danna’s bit on Poeltl.
  3. CONGRATS, SOUL BRO! – I’ve never taken one of these classes, specifically, but I have been in this situation. You might have, too. Luc captures the scene perfectly. And uncomfortably.

THREE FOR BART: Humbled, Football, Interstellar

  1. On Being Humbled – You ever think things are working out like this and they wind up like that? And that isn’t remotely close to where you want it to be. It knocks you perhaps down a peg, begging you to reexamine relationships and trust because that is just so far away from what this was going to be? Have you ever been humbled? I know I have. And more recently, good friend Luc had such experiences and has had the self awareness to write about it and learn from it. I’m team Luc (also he’s a helluva hoops mind).
  2. After 15 long years, UA relevant again Arizona football has, by and large, sucked. We hired John Mackovic and had the entire team bypass the Athletic Director, marching right into the school president’s office, and ask for his firing. At one point – and I paraphrase this stat – Arizona was one of three BCS-level schools during the BCS era, to not go to a bowl game. Any bowl game. Ineptitude from 1998-2008. So yeah, 9-2 is something. And you’re not going to talk me off my stance that there’s a fighter’s chance at the playoff. It’s far fetched. Outlandish even (although FiveThiryEight isn’t against it). But that’s what happens after 15-years of being irrelevant and losing four Elite Eight games by 7 points (and another by 26). This is fun.
  3. An ‘Interstellar’ Explainer: What are bulk beings? – Remember how felt when ‘Interstellar’ ended? That’s how you’ll feel after this article. If you can explain it in even lay-er of lay terms, holler atcha boy.
